13/10/22 : CAIRO - GREAT PYRAMIDS OF GIZA & SPHINX
13/10/22 : CAIRO - Great Pyramids of Giza
The Great Pyramids of Giza was built as tombs for the mighty Pharaohs and is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the world. We stood below it and looked in wonders, we were really dwarfed. The three largest are: the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Great Pyramid of Khufu. Of those located in modern Egypt, most were built as tombs for the country's pharaohs and their consorts during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. The Pyramid of Khufu is the largest Egyptian pyramid. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence, despite its being the oldest wonder by about 2,000 years.
We then proceeded to the second Pyramid to see what lies inside. In my last Holy land tour, they did not show and we were disappointed. We want to see Egypt again because of it. It was an experience to enter the tomb. We had to bend and climb down in dark steps and passage and again climb up. We felt like raiders raiding the tombs. It was blank chamber, everything raided away. There was a just empty sacrophages, mummies all taken away.
From here we drove off to see the huge towering Sphinx. With a lion's body and a human head, it represents Ra-Horakhty, a form of the powerful sun god, and is the incarnation of royal power and the protector of the temple doors. In Egyptian myth, the Sphinx was more of a symbol than an individual entity. It was a guardian figure, the protector of the pyramids, and the scourge of the enemies of Re, the sun god. It also represented the pharaoh and the pharaoh's divine power.
